Difference Between State/Federal Law
States laws can be different from federal laws, even though the states still have to abide by the feds. States can also have laws that don't apply to other states. For example, in Chicago, Illinois, it is illegal to fish while sitting on a giraffe's neck. Yet, in Nebraska? Fish all you want while sitting on a giraffe's neck! It's not illegal! Another example is one from Canton, Ohio: If you lose your pet tiger, you have to notify authorities within one hour. But if you lost your pet tiger in New York? Hey, it's New York; no one cares! This just shows how different state laws are from each other and how the federal law doesn't have to be the same as the states.

Different City, County, State, Federal Law Enforcement
Within each county, state, and nation, there are separate police forces. For example, in California, there is a Solano County. In Solano County are a few cities. One city is Vacaville; their police force is Vacaville Police Department (or VVPD). In the county, the police force is Solano County Police. In the state, there is California State Police. In the nation, there is the FBI. This shows the separation of gov't and how the forces deal with problems at a local level. For instance, if someone is picked up for public intoxication in Vacaville, the FBI isn't going to directly handle it; it's VVPD's job.
Federal v. State Courts
The state courts and the federal courts are very different, even though they both follow the same system. If someone is charged innocent in a state court, there is a chance that the same person could be found guilty in a federal court. This is because the gov't is separated so that local problems can be dealt with on a local level. That way, not every issue that appears goes straight to the federal court.
